Like so many of us in Central Oregon, Judy came from California. There, she was a hunter/jumper who, given her Haflinger size, helped young riders learn to jump. At Healing Reins, she’s known as a kind-hearted horse who is especially attentive to her riders. Here, she helps children learn to walk, jump and climb stairs; strengthen muscles; improve balance; and experience joy!

Our daughter is non-verbal, but she’s learned to communicate with her horse, Aesir, by giving him commands. Thank you for supporting Healing Reins in honor of her and Aesir’s special bond.

I love Axel. He’s my favorite. I wish I had Mohawk hair like his.

These last few months, working with Bella, I have FINALLY found a respite from the “real world”—I’ve found peace and something to look forward to. Working with my trainer Jess, my volunteers Bill and Justin, and my horse Bella, make it worth me getting through life until my next lesson.

Axel, who is usually quite stoic, reached his head around and laid his chin on the veteran’s shoulder. That demonstration of compassion from Axel deeply touched the veteran and formed a bond between the two of them. From then on, they were a team.

She is very responsive, even to those who can only ride one-handed. Her bouncy but rhythmic trot helps riders to learn and practice posting, which builds not only their strength, but also their confidence.

Raz is one of the few gaited horses in our herd (gaited horses have been selectively bred to achieve smooth-to-ride, ambling gaits). As such, he enables our clients—particularly those who use wheelchairs— to experience a different kind of movement. Raz has a reputation as a very social horse. This serves him well in his work with groups of adolescents, teens and young adults from Rimrock Trails, Cascade Crest Transitions, and New Leaf Academy.
